Known Problems and Work-Arounds
22 October 1, 1998
Description The response collector fails to collect from all targets on an IRA
Symptom In some cases, the response collector process (rtcollectd) will fail to
collect data from some or all of the targets configured on an Internetwork
Response Agent (IRA). The response data file indicates “Agent or target
is currently unreachable.” Data collection outages are often intermittent,
with collection succeeding for some intervals and failing for others.
Details If the community strings for the IRA are correctly configured on the data
collection host, then the problem may be that the communication
between the response collector and the IRA is timing out, even if data
collection is performed on the same host as the IRA. [Defect ID 0804–
009340]
Work-Around Increase the timeout value for the IRA using Options➤SNMP
Configuration in OVNNM.
Description Occasionally, arwrite may create a very large archive file
Details In some circumstances, arwrite may create a very large daily archive
file—perhaps as large as several hundred megabytes, when a typical
archive file is generally less than four megabytes. The archive file itself is
not corrupted; it contains valid data (although it may be missing one or
two time intervals from the end of the day), and NetMetrix applications
will process the file correctly. The problem may occur after an ERM host
is rebooted.
Work-Around If you have one of these large files, you can use the loadmerge utility to
reclaim the excess disk space while retaining all the data in the archive.
Give commands like these:
mv D1996_12_04 D1996_12_04.big
loadmerge -o D1996_12_04 D1996_12_04.big
rm D1996_12_04.big
